Set to the music of artists as varied as Beyoncé, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adele, and Metallica, The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of Martha Stewart is a chronicle of epically blind ambition. Hailed as “a one-man musical juggernaut” (New York Daily News) and “a force of nature all his own” (Interview Magazine), Ryan Raftery is the creator of the smash-hit Anna Wintour, Andy Cohen, and Calvin Klein musicals. A native New Yorker and graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Raftery has been seen on television in Ugly Betty, What I Like About You, Malcolm in the Middle and, most memorably, on Law & Order: SVU where he warmed hearts all across America as Dennis Faber, the Amish teenager with measles. A rare box-office flop for Disney when it was first released in movie theaters in 1992, Newsies made headlines by becoming a cult hit on home video. And since the Mouse House knows a little something about turning a film into a Broadway smash (see: The Lion King and Mary Poppins), Newsies hit the stage in 2012 featuring eight new songs and never looked back. Pack a picnic and enjoy.
You can dance if you want to at this ‘80s-tastic concert featuring synth and electronic music pioneer Howard Jones and new wave icons Men Without Hats. Jones first burst onto the contemporary music scene with his double-platinum album Human’s Lib and hit singles like “No One Is to Blame,” which rocketed to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts. Men Without Hats have left an unmistakable mark on pop music over their three decades performing together, releasing hit singles like 1983’s “The Safety Dance” and “Pop Goes the World” and their certified Platinum album Rhythm of Youth. Rounding out the program is electronic music duo All Hail the Silence, whose latest album Daggers is a love letter to the synth-pop of yesteryear, inspired by some of the same artists they’ll be sharing the stage with at this unforgettable show at The Warfield in San Francisco.

Gene’s offbeat perspective seems to go over quite well with all audiences and crosses all racial and ethnic lines. He headlines regularly at comedy clubs across the country, doing a stand-up show with great social relevance and irrelevance. As a product of the multi-ethnic suburbs of Los Angeles, Gene was inspired to utilize universal themes in his stand-up and his writing. Gene was born in East Los Angeles and raised in the working-class suburbs of Southern California. He’s been a Mexican-American for most of his life, except for a few years during the 70s when he was a “practicing Chicano.”

Leave it to the pull-no-punches, politically charged mind of John Leguizamo to dream up Kiss My Aztec!, a fresh, irreverent musical comedy take on the arrival of the conquistadors. Elizabethan dialect collides with modern slang set to a mashup of salsa, hip-hop and funk for this tale of an unlikely pair of Aztecs who mount a scrappy uprising against their Spanish oppressors — and somehow get entangled in the dysfunctional bickering of the Spanish viceroy’s family. If you loved Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons (nominated for Tony’s Best Play), you won’t want to miss his latest work at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Please note that John Leguizamo won’t be performing in Kiss My Aztec! — other fantastic actors will be starring in this uproarious new musical.
1863, Italy: In a remote military outpost, a handsome army captain, separated from his beautiful (but married) mistress, is forced to reevaluate his thoughts on love when he becomes the object of the obsessive, unrelenting passions of Fosca, his Colonel’s plain, sickly cousin. From the brilliant mind of Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods) comes this emotionally charged chamber musical, which has steadily earned a reputation as one of Stephen Sondheim’s most deeply emotional works. Intimate and erotic, it explores the line between love and obsession, power and manipulation. Now Passion makes its long-awaited San Francisco debut at Custom Made’s intimate theater, which has had recent hits with Into the Heights, Man of La Mancha and Chess (Best Production, Bay Area Critic’s Circle). Don’t miss the opportunity to see this rarely produced masterpiece.

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one hilarious, show-stopping song and dance number after another. With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and offers to take the audience on a delightful journey through the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. As the record plays, the show comes to life inside his apartment, including two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and a “drowsy” (i.e., intoxicated) chaperone. Add in an amazing score and remarkable tap dancing and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight. Hailed by New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical,” The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre. Don’t miss this show at San Francisco’s Shelton Theater.
One of the most beloved films of the ‘80s, the Tom Hanks comedy classic is now a heartfelt musical fantasy. Josh Baskin is 12 years old. He wishes that his mom would stop hugging him in public, that he didn’t have to take out the garbage, and that Cynthia Benson, the girl next door, would notice him. When she passes him over for an older boy, Josh makes a wish to be big … and wakes up the next morning in the body of a 30-year-old man. Taking off to the big city, Josh now must navigate the unknown world of adults — a world of jobs, girlfriends and disgustingly fancy foods — as he and his best friend seek out a way to undo the spell that caused him to grow. Filled with Zoltar machines, floor pianos and a dazzling, pop-filled score, Big: The Musical reminds us that there’s always room to be a child at heart. Get in on all the fun at the Berkeley Playhouse.
Based on the cult classic 1989 film, Heathers the Musical is a rowdy, guilty-pleasure musical which takes an unflinching look at the joy and anguish of high school. Westerberg High is ruled by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing posse: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio. Misfit Veronica Sawyer, who hustles her way into this teenage power trifecta, discovers that life in the Teflon crowd isn’t all that it seems. All bets are off when a handsome stranger, JD, plans to put the Heathers in their place — six feet under. So… Are you in, or are you out? The darkly delicious satire comes to Fort Mason Center’s Cowell Theater in San Francisco.
The 1950s are out and change is in the air. Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, is a fun musical piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ’do. This musical will dance its way into your heart when it hits the stage of San Francisco’s Victoria Theatre.

The ukulele has come a long way in recent years — from a hipster novelty item to a serious musical instrument, and much of that is thanks to virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. Rolling Stone has declared him a musical hero. He’s drawn comparisons to Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix. He’s even performed his nimble-fingered mix of jazz, surf rock and pop for the Queen of England. From traditional Hawaiian tunes to covers of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” one listen and it’s not hard to see why he’s racked up millions of YouTube views, released more than a dozen albums — including his latest, The Greatest Day — and jammed with everyone from Yo-Yo Ma to Bette Midler. Now you can catch the renowned uke wizard live in concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga.
